  • Aim of the unity

    The aim of this unit is to provide the students with information technology skills and knowledge that help him/her to cope with an information-rich society for lifelong learning and develop attitude in computer fundamentals.

    Features of the modules:


    1. This module is taught in year one BIT department /undergraduate.
    2. It is a pillar of learning in current knowledge based society.
    3. It is taught in blended learning mode of delivery (Online and face to face).
    4. It helps to deal with information-rich society.
    5. It is made of both theoretical and practical parts

    Learning outcomes of the modules:

    At the end of this module you will be able to:
    1. Utilize basic knowledge and skills of computer in learning practices.
    2. Apply MS Office suite & OpenOffice in daily life activities.
    3. Use internet for research and sharing information.
    4. Integrate ICT in learning of different subjects

    The aim of this unit is to provide essential knowledge, and skills and develop attitude in computer fundamentals.

    Learning outcomes:

    At the end of this unit, you will be able to:


    1. Explain ICT related concepts and terms with their appropriate use in daily life.
    2. Describe the benefits and effectiveness of different ICT tools.
    3. Identify different parts, functions and characteristics of computer
    4. Explain data representation, storage and managements of files

    What students should do:

    Students should do the following:


    E-tivity 1.1 [2 hours]

    The purpose of this e-tivity 1.1 is to allow you to get introduction to different existing ICT tools and ICT related concepts.

    Task:


    1. Write a brief essay that

    (i) Lists existing ICT tools;
    (ii) Explains the importance of each ICT tool;
    (iii) Explains key concepts of ICT;

    2. Post your work in the discussion forum for etivity1.1 in week 1 discussion board by Wednesday at 23h30 of the week this unit will be taught or click here to get the questions and create your own post to post your answers

    3. Read what other students posted in your team and comment on at least three work of your team.

    E-tivity 1.2 [2 hours]

    This e-tivity 1.2 helps you to get familiarized with basic topics which are essential for mastering the module contents.

    Do the following questions as an assignment and post it on eLearning platform by Friday of the week this unit will be taught at 23h30. (open link below of etivity1.2 assignment)

    Task:

    1. What does digital technology mean?
    2. Give an example of the most critical ICT tool of our time that has become a transformational agent in the day-to-day life of people?
    3. Which of the following statements about ICT is correct about ICT?
    a. ICT is a term used to describe methods of information communication exclusively
    b. It is a term used to describe methods of information communications along with techniques for storing and processing information.
    c. It is a term used to describe techniques of storing and processing information.

    4. Mention two examples of ICT application areas.

    E-tivity 1.3 [2 hours]

    This e-tivity helps you to achieve the unit level learning outcomes 3 and 4.

    Post the file of your answers on the discussion forum of this unit by Friday of the week in which this unit is taught to interact with your classmates and you e moderator (etivity1.3.4)

    What students should do:

    E-tivity 2.1 [3 hours]

    The purpose of this e-tivity 2.1 is to allow you to be familiar of working with excel sheets and MS EXCEL environment.

    Task:

    Download the file called etivity2.1 and do requested process
    Post any challenge you met during your work in the discussion forum on week 1 discussion board to discuss with your e moderator and your colleagues. ( etivity2.1.0 discussion forum)
    Read what other students from your team have posted and comment on them.
    E-tivity 2.2 [4 hour]

    The purpose of this e-tivity 2.2 is to help you to get ready of working with Ms excel formulas and do required formatting.

    Task:

    Download the file containing the questions of etivity2.2 and then act accordingly.

    Discuss any challenge you met on the chart with your e-moderator after finalizing this etivity ( chart on etivity2.2.0)

    E-tivity 2.3 [5 hours]

    This activity will help you to be familiar of working with excel formulas and functions.

    You will submit this activity as an assignment upon completion this specific topic (assignment on etivity 2.3)


    Task :

    Open an assignment link and get the file containing the questions, answer them and then post the answers for grading.

    What students should do:

    E-tivity 3.1 [2 hour]


    This e-tivity 3.1 aims to help you to understand very well how you can interact with Microsoft PowerPoint, starting by creating new slides, switch changing slides, applying different formatting options in your presentation
    to come up with a good presentation.

    Task:

    a. By using MS PowerPoint, prepare a presentation of 10 slides talking about your achievements so far done in this module. Add animation effects to the bullet items, add transition and appropriate sound effects and add a timing to automate your slide show .
    b. Post the answer and any challenge you met on the discussion forum upon completion  of this topic. (etivity3.1 forum)


    E-tivity 3.2 [3 hours]


    The main focus of this E-tivity is to come up with all possible options you can add to your presentation including videos, sounds, customised animations charts, etc.


    Task:

    1. create presentation like the one attached on this topic called etivity3.2
    2. apply on all slides uncover right – down transition with 5 second interval
    3.apply on each slide contents different animations 
    4. Create footer with your name ,page number and variable dates
    5.By using master view add the shape in corner(right up).

    Do this etivity as an assignment and upload it for grading (etivity 3.2.0 assignment)

    The aim of this unit is to provide an essential knowledge on using Microsoft office access.

    Intended learning outcomes:

    At the end of this unit, you will be able to:

    1. Manage the Access environment.
    2. Build tables and forms in MS Access.
    3. Create and manage queries in Access.
    4. Understand how to generate reports in Access

    What students should do?

    Students should do the following:

    E-tivity 4.1 [2hours]

    This e-tivity 4.1 helps you to be familiar with Microsoft access environment and perfom some basic activities on it.

    Task.

    Create a database and call it task 1.

    Under that created database, create the students records table with the following fields:

    • StudentID
    • FirstName (15),
    • LastName (15),
    • Sex (1)
    • DateOfBirth,
    • Country (10)
    • Department (15),
    • Faculty (15)

    Discuss your answers on discussion forum and interact with your e moderator and Your colleagues (etivity4.1)

    E-tivity 4.2 [2 hours]

    This e-tivity 4.2 intends to help you to clearly understand the use of forms in Microsoft access.

    Task:

    Open the file called etivity4.2 attached here on this unity and do all processes as mentioned. if there is any challenge you meet join the chat called (etivity4.2.0) to interact with your e-moderator.

    E-tivity 4.3 [3 hours]

    This e-tivity 4.4 helps to understand very well the way queries can be generated and produce a report.

    Task:

    By using a table attached here to this topic(called etivity 2) Create queries that will give the following information:

    (i) All male students from Rwanda doing computer science sorted in ascending order using their fname.
    (ii) All female students from Rwanda in a faculty of FSEG sorted in ascending order using their stud_ID.
    (iii) All students doing statistics arranged in ascending order using their Lname.
    (iv) All students from Burundi arranged in their respective department.
    (v) All students who were born in the year 75 and 76.

    Post the answers on the discussion board ( called etivity4.3) by Wednesday at 23h30 for comments from colleagues and then review you file based on comments given and send final copy to e-moderators’ email by Friday at 23h30.
