The aims of the course are to develop students’ capacity to think critically about environmental governance issues and to discuss solutions to problems at the local, national and global levels. The course will explore the roles of governments, non-governmental organisations and civil society organizations in environmental
management aspects.
The aim of this module is to discuss with students major issues related
to environmental governance at all levels.
- In details the module will cover the following topics:
- Major environmental problems at global, regional and national levels;
- Major drivers of environmental change around the World;
- Major themes in environmental governance (EG) at the global level;
- Key challenges to effective Global Environmental Governance (GEG);
- Proposed Models for GEG reform;
- Principles of good EG;
- The role of state and non-state stakeholders in EG;
- National and global instruments in EG;
- Current status of EG in Rwanda. As a case study, the module will analyze key issues in EG in Rwanda through the assessment of existing policies and strategies.
Learning Outcomes
- At the end of the module the students should be able to:
- Explain major environmental problems at both international, regional and national levels;
- Explain major drivers of environmental change around the World;
- Discuss major themes in environmental governance;
- Analyze key challenges to effective global environmental governance;
- Discuss models for global environmental governance reform
- Explain key principles of good environmental governance,
- Explain the role of state and non-state actors in environmental governance at the global level;
- Analyze key national and global instruments in environmental governance;
- Discuss key issues in environmental governance in Rwanda through the assessment of existing laws, policies, and strategies.
The main teaching and learning methods are based on lecturer-led introductory
lectures, followed by student contributions. The latter will include active participation in discussions, group work in case study discussions, and (written and oral) presentation of case study contributions in plenary sessions.
