Welcome Message & Module Aim
Welcome Message:
This module takes you on an exciting journey into advanced medical imaging—Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Nuclear Medicine (NM), and Radiation Therapy (RT). You will explore technical and anatomical foundations alongside cutting-edge trends like AI and hybrid imaging. Expect interactive content, virtual labs, and case-based discussions.
Module Aim:
To enable students to acquire the knowledge, skills, and professional attitudes required for specialized imaging modalities (CT, MRI, NM, and RT).
3. Learning Outcomes (Abridged)
Upon successful completion, students will be able to:
-
Analyze cross-sectional anatomy and justify patient positioning protocols for CT, MRI, NM, and RT.
-
Differentiate normal from abnormal imaging patterns to formulate preliminary impressions.
-
Operate (via simulation) and articulate core principles of advanced imaging equipment.
-
Evaluate indications, contraindications, and ethical considerations for imaging/therapy exams.
-
Propose appropriate applications of current trends (e.g., AI, hybrid imaging) to improve outcomes.
4. Weekly Blended Learning Structure (15 Weeks)
The course follows a flipped classroom model with asynchronous (self-paced) and synchronous (live) activities.
| Weeks | Topics | Key Activities (Simulated/Virtual) |
|---|---|---|
| 1-4 | CT Imaging (Head, Neck, Thorax, Abdomen, MSK, Spine) | 3D anatomy labeling, virtual lab for positioning, case-based pattern recognition game |
| 5-6 | MRI Principles & Imaging (Neuro, Body, MSK) | Interactive T1/T2 animations, safety zone simulation, coil selection virtual lab |
| 7 | Mid-Trimester Break & CAT 1 Exam (CT + MRI) | Proctored online exam (10%) |
| 8-10 | Nuclear Medicine (NM) & Radiotherapy (RT) | Gamma camera/PET vs. SPECT simulation, RT planning tour, ethical case discussions |
| 11-12 | Current Trends (AI, Hybrid Imaging, AR/VR, Big Data) | Live debate on “Will AI replace technologists?”, guest lecture from industry expert |
| 13-15 | Integrated Review, Final Projects & Exams | Mock exam, peer review, CAT 2 (15%), Final Project (25%), Cumulative Final Exam (35%) |
5. Assessment Strategy (Total: 100%)
| Component | Weight | Details |
|---|---|---|
| In-Course Assessment (50%) | ||
| CT Case Study Report | 15% | Due Week 4 |
| CAT 1 (Proctored Quiz) | 10% | Week 7 (CT & MRI) |
| Final Project (Presentation/Essay) | 25% | Due Week 14 (e.g., “Optimizing CT for pediatrics” or “AI denoising algorithm”) |
| Final Assessment (50%) | ||
| CAT 2 (Proctored Exam) | 15% | Week 14 (Units 1-5) |
| Cumulative Final Exam (Proctored) | 35% | Week 15 (all content) |
6. Key Features & Implementation Notes
-
Blended Strategy: Foundational knowledge is acquired online (videos, readings); application occurs in live virtual labs, case discussions, and debates.
-
Practical Skills (Simulated): Direct patient contact is replaced by simulation software, 3D anatomical models, video demos, and virtual lab tours (representing ~30 practical hours).
-
LMS Platform: Moodle/Canvas/Blackboard hosts content, quizzes, discussions, and assignments.
-
Feedback: Automated quiz feedback, written feedback on reports/projects, live verbal feedback during synchronous sessions, and office hours (Wednesdays 2-4 PM via Zoom).
