VD80564: Character Design
Semester I

This module introduces to the art of creating complex, multi‐faceted 2D and 3D captivating and meaningful characters across various artistic styles, i.e. the creation and development of the appearance, personality, and style of characters for animation. Characters are core components of any storytelling work. In this framework, the module will give you the fundamentals of the theory and practice of the creation of characters for a wide range of digital media including 2D and 3D animation and illustration to name a few. The module follows the Craft module model, with practical tutor-lead sessions in studio being the primary mode of delivery. In these sessions, students are introduced to theory in the context of exercises, building their knowledge and understanding alongside their intellectual and practical skills.  This course offers a structured approach that combines fundamental anatomical knowledge with artistic techniques, fostering the development of unique and compelling characters through intensive hands-on projects using the latest software and techniques, including Daz Studio, Character Creator, After effects. You will learn how to design and model your own character in 3D and in 2D, how to texture and rig, and how to test them through simple animations like walk and run cycles.
