Module description and aim :
The module is aimed at equipping students with core concepts theories and different approaches and types of Urban Planning, and schools taught and paradigm shifts in urban on one hand, and results of those approaches and types of Urban and Regional Planning based on some case studies.
Learning outcomes
1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts and approaches in urban planning, including schools of thought and paradigm shifts etc.
2. Differentiate different types of planning processes and plans (e.g. sectoral; infrastructure; land use) at different administrative levels (town; district; region)
3. Understand important (spatial) policies, typical policy formulation processes and policy instruments at urban and regional level
4. Appreciate and explain the role of information in urban planning and policy making
5. Relate and apply theories and concepts of urban planning to practical real-life situations in the context of Rwanda and East Africa.
6. Develop a structured and consistent planning process in urban planning.
7. Understand the concepts, theories, schools thought and paradigms shifts of urban planning
8. Apply theories and concepts of urban planning to practical real-life situations in the context of Rwanda
9. To collect and analyses the data from field observation or from survey for planning problem solving
10. Critically review the planning policy documents
11. To work independently or in group and present the results to the large public.
