Read the following scenario and answer the questions at the end:
In a family, Bugiri and Gisa are two children, aged 10 and 5. Bugiri is quiet, well-mannered, and tends to suppress his emotions to appear mature. He respects boundaries and avoids unnecessary interaction with guests, which reflects his developing moral part of the mind that internalizes parental expectations.
Gisa, on the other hand, is in the period of development where children begin to form emotional attachments to the opposite-sex parent. He is loud, emotionally expressive, and often displays jealousy when he must be separated from his mother at night. He becomes angry and sometimes aggressive when forced to sleep in a separate room.
Gisa resents his father, particularly when his father enforces rules that prevent him from being close to his mother. His resistance and emotional outbursts may be seen as reflecting his desire for emotional closeness and comfort. He feels happier and secure when the father is not home, as he can freely sleep in his mother’s room.
Bugiri, now older, seems to have resolved such early childhood conflicts and takes pride in his independence. He often mocks Gisa, perhaps as a defense mechanism to distance himself from behavior he once exhibited. His laughter may also reflect his capacity to balance the demands of reality with internal feelings.
Questions:
- 1. What do you think about the behaviours of Gisa and Bugiri?
- 2. Do you think Gisa exaggerates his behaviour? Explain.
- 3. Why do you think Gisa has negative feelings toward his father?
- 4. Did you experience the same situation as a child? Explain.
