The East African Rift System (EARS) is one of the geologic wonders of the world, a place where the earth's tectonic forces are presently trying to create new plates by splitting apart old ones. The module provides an in-depth understanding of East African Rift Valley geology with a particular emphasis on the East African great lakes region.The purpose of this course is to discuss the general geology of this great rift and highlight the geologic processes involved in its formation
The course aims to provide the knowledge of measuring the heights and distances by the advanced surveying methods such as Tachometric surveying, surveying adjustments, triangulation surveying, photogrammetry surveying. Also the use of modern electromagnetic surveying equipment will be tackled (Global Positioning System (GPS), Total Stations, and Electronic Distance Measurements (EDM)). The course provides also basic elements of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS).

Brief description of aims and content
This module aims at equipping students with basic skills and tools for conducting research. It provides a basic and advanced understanding of statistical analysis; to develop a working knowledge of appropriate statistical software; to be introduced to the key skills needed to prepare for and undertake a piece of research. The module will also cover analytical techniques, experimental design, sampling, simple statistical models and probability, descriptive Statistics and Probability distributions, etc.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
1. Research methods and evaluation of appropriate literature
2. Statistical analysis;
3. Working knowledge of appropriate statistical software;
4. The key skills needed to prepare for and undertake a piece of research.
