This course aims to reflect on how education can be used as a tool for addressing conflicts peacefully. It creates opportunities for both the facilitator and participants to reflect on existing literature on the role of education in shaping the lives of people, and experiences on how education has been used and can be used to instill among the people skills and knowledge of handling conflicts before they become violent.

This optional module has been designed to introduce undergraduate students, who have familiarity with one criminal justice system, to the varied ways in which criminal law operates in different legal traditions and societies.

-    Identify methods of regulating legal relationships containing a foreign element, in the absence of a uniform substantive law and in the presence of concurrent and juxtaposed national legal systems i.e. to identify methods of regulating the conflict of laws, the conflict of jurisdiction, methods of renvoi, etc.

-    Determine the applicable law to cases containing a foreign element depending on the field of law:

  • under family law: personal status, marriage, divorce, international adoption, etc.;
  • under property law: real status;
  • under tort law: civil liability;
  • under the law of contracts: obligations, contractual relationships, etc.;
  • under the law of successions: representation and distribution of property.

-    Understand the procedures for execution of foreign judgments and authentic acts.
