EM80564 Research Project for Environmental Planning and Management
Trimester 3
Brief Description of Aims and Content
  The aim of this module is to equip students' knowledge and skills that will help them to design their own final research project on environmental planning and management related topics. In details, the module will focus on the following aspects: understanding the meaning of science and research; formulating research problems; conducting conceptual and research frameworks; conducting a critical reading; undertaking a well-structured technical writing; ethics & professionalism in science & use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-generated tools in environmental research.

LEANING OUTCOMES

 At the end of the module the students should be able to:

  • Define major types of scientific research;
  • Explain major research approaches in geographical and environmental studies;
  • Analyse methods and techniques of identifying a research topic);
  • Discuss the role and responsibilities of a supervisor;
  • Explain main research proposal stages;
    • Research topic
    • Background information
    • Problem statement
    • Significance of the study
    • Objectives
    • Hypotheses
    • Research methodology
    • References
  • Discuss the template of writing and presenting a research project;
  • Explain different styles of referencing.

 This module comprises two main parts: (1)Theoretical part and (2)Practical part.

  1. Theory
  • Why doing research?
  • Formulating a research topic

GE02362 Hazard and Disaster Risk Analysis and Management
Trimester 3

Natural hazards are increasingly disrupting socio-economic lives of countries worldwide. With the ongoing climate change and increasing population, the impacts of hazards are predicted to be even higher and worse unless informed decisions are taken. This module aims to equip students with deep understanding of hazards how they turn into disasters. It exposes them on how to analyses and manage disaster risk; identify areas prone to natural hazards using GIS and Remote Sensing (landslide, earthquake, flood, drought, etc.), assess their impacts on health as well as how they can be strategically managed to minimize their potential impacts.

Upon completion of the module, students should be able to:

  • Identify and characterize different types of hazards
  • Analyse hazards
  • Analyse exposure, vulnerability, and risks
  • Explain the impacts on health once a disaster happens
  • Propose possible mitigation against disasters.
