The aim of this module is to provide a thorough introduction to modern approaches in Mathematical Biology. The module covers standard topics normally included in a first course on Mathematical Biology: population biology including epidemiology, mathematical ecology of one or two species, population genetics and evolution, and systems biology
The mission of the Mathematics Department is to provide a dynamic, research-oriented, and intellectually stimulating environment for postgraduate students, enabling them to achieve advanced knowledge in mathematics and develop high-level competence in its theory and applications. The department is committed to fostering independent thinking, rigorous analytical skills, and innovative problem-solving abilities, preparing graduates to become leaders in academia, industry, and research, as well as lifelong learners who contribute meaningfully to scientific advancement and societal development.
This mission is implemented through well-structured postgraduate academic programs at both Master’s and PhD levels. These programs are designed to deepen students’ understanding of mathematical theory while promoting original research and specialization in key areas such as Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics, and related disciplines. Emphasis is placed on the integration of theoretical foundations with real-world applications, equipping students with the expertise required to address complex scientific, technological, and socio-economic challenges.
In addition, the department plays a significant role in supporting advanced learning and research across the University of Rwanda by collaborating with other colleges and contributing to interdisciplinary postgraduate training. Mathematics is recognized as a core discipline underpinning innovation in fields such as science, engineering, data science, economics, and beyond.
In fulfilling its mission, the department emphasizes excellence in research, graduate supervision, and the dissemination of mathematical knowledge. It serves a diverse postgraduate community, including Master’s students, doctoral candidates, and researchers, fostering a culture of inquiry, collaboration, and academic distinction in areas such as applied mathematics, statistics, mathematics education, and emerging interdisciplinary fields.
